Textile Exhibition – Fisher Theatre Gallery

March 8 @ 8:00 am - April 2 @ 5:00 pm

Mary Walker, a creative painter and textile artist who died in 2022, lived in Bungay for over 30 years, in the course of which time she not only inspired both men and women to pick up an embroidery needle to create community projects but also lead regular and inspirational textile classes.

She was also commissioned to undertake several major textile commissions in Bungay, most notably for Bungay Library and  Bungay’s St Mary’s Church. The design for the Library involved some forty-four volunteers who helped her make the Bungay scene that hangs in the stairwell. Meanwhile the St Mary’s Church commission, again incorporating pieces made by volunteers, involved not only producing a sequence of embroidered panels depicting scenes from the town’s history but also the reproduction of the church’s roof bosses. These all now hang in the church, with the roof bosses often on display in exhibitions.
