Bungay is a beautiful historic market town, in the heart of the Waveney Valley, with roots that can be traced back to Roman times.
Nestling within a wide meander of the river Waveney, which forms the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, Bungay was, and is, in an excellent position then, to ward off invaders, now to explore the delights of both Norfolk and Suffolk.
Standing proudly in the centre of Market Place is the Butter Cross, built in the 17th century with the statue of Justice on top of the dome, erected some 60 years later. The Butter Cross was paired with a Corn Cross, long since demolished, and marked Bungay’s importance as a vibrant market town. Indeed, a weekly market still takes place around the Butter Cross each Thursday and with its annual Street Markets, independent food producers and shops Bungay continues to thrive as a market town.
From the Butter Cross it is just a few steps to first visit the old Benedictine priory ruins which lie behind the majestic St. Mary’s church and, over the road and through the passageway between The Swan and the Bungay Shopper, Bungay Castle can be found. Also in picturesque ruins the Castle can be accessed through the café that sits beside it. Well worth a visit.
Bungay is known for its many independent shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes but step away from the centre and you will find yourself, whether you go west or north, by the river where you can explore the delights of Falcon Meadow or Outney Common.
