DESCRIPTION:Worthy Women\nSaturday 19 September \n10am to 3pm \nLocation: Bungay Town Hall\, 1A Broad Street\, Bungay\, Suffolk\, NR35 1EE \nThe exhibition includes access to the Council Chambers. \nContact on day: John Adams\,  07900240169 \nPre-booking not required \nThroughout Bungay’s history\, women have played a vital role in shaping the town and its surrounding communities while making an enduring contribution to the welfare and lives of its people.  \nThe exhibition celebrates just five of the women from the last millennium who made a particularly interesting contribution: \nGundred de Beaumont (Gundred\, Countess of Norfolk) was an Anglo-Norman noblewoman and the founder of Bungay Priory. \nLavinia Crosse  (Mother Lavinia) was an English Anglican nun and foundress. She founded the Anglican Community of All Hallows near Ditchingham. \nLilias Rider Haggard MBE was awarded the MBE in 1920 for her work as a Voluntary Aid Detachment auxiliary nurse during the First World War.    She wrote a number of books inhcluding ‘Norfolk Life’ based on the columns she wrote for the Eastern Daily Press. \nElizabeth Bonhote was born in Bungay in April 1744.  She founded almshouses for elderly women and the widows of poor traders in Bungay.  Elizabeth penned the Gothic romance novel ‘Bungay Castle’ after her husband had bought the ruins of Bungay Castle. \nNurse Marjorie Britain arrived in Bungay around 1920 to work as a nurse and midwife.  She supervised the birth of hundreds of babies.  She started ‘Bungay Baby’ week as part of a national campaign to improve knowledge of the feeding and rearing of infants. She also served on a national committee for infant welfare. \n\nWheelchair accessible on the ground floor but not on upper floors\n\n

The business began by making leather aprons\, gloves\, and protective equipment for agricultural workers and blacksmiths before becoming renowned for its sheepskin products. \nThe Nursey family’s 168 years of ownership came to an end in 2014\, when the original physical business in Upper Olland Street finally closed its doors. \nNursey’s sheepskin coats reached iconic status during the 1960s\, 70s and 80s\, when demand soared. Their distinctive coats were worn by everyone from General Montgomery to Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses. \nThe workshop will be open\, and cutters and machinists who still work above the old shop will demonstrate the same hand‑craft manufacturing methods. \nDon’t miss this final opportunity to step inside a piece of Bungay’s industrial and fashion history. \n\nPlease note visitors will be required to climb stairs.

DESCRIPTION:A hidden gem in the heart of Bungay – St Edmund’s Catholic Church\nFriday 11 September to Saturday 12 September \n10am to 4pm \nGuided Tours: Friday at 2pm and Saturday at 10am and 2pm \nLocation: St Edmund’s Church\, 1 St Mary’s Street\, Bungay\, Suffolk\, NR35 1AX \nContact on day: Pete Johnson\, 07708065338 \nPre-booking not required \nDiscover one of the largest baptisteries in England\, a wonderful collection of stained glass and wood carving\, displays of historical vestments and historic photos and not forgetting the secret garden. \nSt Edmund’s Catholic Church is a grade II listed building in the heart of the town. Behind high walls it is often missed by passers-by. The church and parish have a long association with the Benedictine order of monks. The Catholic Relief Act of 1791 allowed Catholics to worship openly and so the first church in Bungay was opened by the Benedictines in 1823. This was enlarged to the present proportions in 1890\, with the baptistery added in 1894. Funding provided by a local donor\, Frederic Smith\, amounts to well over a million pounds in modern terms. The association with the Benedictines came to an end in 2021\, with the parish being handed over to the diocese of East Anglia. \n\nFull wheelchair access\nAccessible toilets\nPushchair / pram friendly\nRefreshments
